Dear Friend,

This May, I am filled with pride and gratitude for the remarkable progress we continue to make together at Justice for all Immigrants (JFAI). One of the most heartwarming updates this month is the U visa approval for Judith and her family, a testament to our collective efforts. Judith's story, which you may have read in our 2023 annual report, is a powerful reminder of the impact of our legal services and your support. Your contributions make these successes possible, and for that, I extend my deepest gratitude.

Additionally, the expansion of health care coverage to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients starting this November is a significant policy change. This will provide affordable health care for over 100,000 young people, reinforcing health care as a right for all. These developments underscore the importance of our work in advocating for immigrant rights. Thank you for standing with us in this vital mission.

With Gratitude,

Joy Green

A New Chapter: Judith's Family Celebrates U Visa Approval

If you have a chance to read our 2023 annual report, you'll be introduced to Judith*, a mother of seven who embarked on a courageous journey from Honduras to the United States as an asylum-seeker looking for safety, dignity, and justice from the perils of narcotrafficking that threatened her family. However, upon arrival, her hopes for safety were quickly overshadowed by survival struggles and being attacked on the street, prompting her to seek help from JFAI in 2015.

Judith's asylum application was approved after receiving a favorable court decision from an immigration judge, thanks to the legal support provided by JFAI. This approval granted her the necessary legal documentation, allowing her to live without fear of deportation.

While her asylum application was pending, JFAI took additional steps to secure the safety of Judith and her children by applying for U visas for the entire family. Judith’s U visa case has been pending since 2016. The great news is that Judith's family received their U visas this month. This significant milestone brings the family security, safety, and happiness.

Judith's case inspires other asylum seekers and crime survivors navigating similar paths and underscores the critical importance of immigration legal services in our community. This immense success was made possible through your strong support of our work and this community in need. Your donations and contributions truly make a difference.

A Hurdle of Asylum-Seekers in Securing Legal Representation

A major challenge for asylum-seekers in the United States is obtaining legal representation to navigate the asylum process. The backlog of asylum cases has surged to 3.5 million from 300,000 in 2012. Currently, only 30% of asylum-seekers have legal representation, down from 65% five years ago. A study by the Center for Migration Studies reveals there is only one legal professional for every 1,413 asylum-seekers. Legal representation significantly increases the chances of winning asylum, according to Christopher Ross of Catholic Charities USA.

In 2023, Justice for All Immigrants (JFAI) was able to support over 200 asylum seekers. More support is urgently needed to ensure the safety and well-being of asylum seekers; please consider donating today!

Biden Administration Unveils New Asylum Process Reform

The Secretary of Homeland Security introduced the Recent Arrivals (RA) Docket process in May 2024 to expedite immigration cases for noncitizen single adults crossing irregularly at the Southwest border. This initiative aims to quickly remove those without a legal basis to stay in the U.S. and promptly grant relief to valid claimants.
