Dear Friend,

As we embark on another year of service, I am reminded that progress often lies in the quieter, steady steps we take toward justice and equity. The start of this year has brought a wave of new challenges as recent executive orders targeting immigration policies cast a shadow of uncertainty over vulnerable families and the organizations dedicated to supporting them. From refugees who face indefinite separation to families at the border stranded in unsafe conditions, these policies threaten the well-being of countless individuals who call the United States their home or seek refuge here.

At Justice for all Immigrants, we feel the weight of these changes deeply. Yet, even in the face of these shifting policies, our mission remains unchanged: to provide high-quality immigration legal services, education, and advocacy to those who need it most. Whether offering critical services to unaccompanied minors and domestic violence survivors, assisting asylum seekers, or educating the public about their rights, we are determined to ensure that the individuals we serve know they are not alone. This work is more urgent than ever, and with your continued support—emotionally, financially, and through shared advocacy—we will stand strong for those most impacted.

We pledge to keep our community informed, educated, and equipped to navigate this uncertain landscape while delivering the critical services that make a tangible difference in people's lives. Now is the time to come together, to act, and to uphold the principles of fairness and opportunity. Together, we can help shape a future where all individuals, regardless of their background, have a chance to thrive.

In Appreciation,

Joy Green
Executive Director

Immigration Policy Changes Create Uncertainty and Fear

In just a matter of weeks, a series of executive orders have transformed U.S. immigration policy, creating widespread uncertainty and fear among immigrant and refugee communities. From deploying troops to the southern border to suspending refugee admissions and cutting federal funding to sanctuary jurisdictions, these actions have one immediate effect: intensifying anxiety for families and the organizations working tirelessly to support them.

We are already seeing the ripple effects. Families at the border, hoping to attend interviews, are stranded in unsafe conditions after appointments were abruptly canceled. Refugees waiting years to reunite with loved ones now face indefinite separation. In border communities, parents are preparing emergency plans for their children, uncertain if they will make it home after leaving for work. Meanwhile, organizations like JFAI must grapple with how to continue providing essential services amidst these escalating challenges.

There are no easy solutions, but we know this: no family should face these challenges alone. JFAI remains committed to providing legal assistance, standing alongside vulnerable individuals, and advocating for practical solutions in a complex and evolving environment. We will continue to monitor these developments closely, keeping our clients and communities informed as we navigate this evolving landscape together. Your support makes this work possible. Together, we can stand up for our neighbors and help them navigate these uncertain times.

Marina’s Fast Track to Citizenship

For Marina,* becoming a U.S. citizen was a long-awaited milestone. Having lived in the United States since 1989 and as a lawful permanent resident since 2004, she faced challenges finding accessible legal assistance—until she turned to Justice for all Immigrants (JFAI).

Marina learned about JFAI through her parents, who became citizens with our support. Inspired by their experience, she sought help for her citizenship process. "Since renewing my residency with JFAI, I’ve appreciated how smooth and quick the process was," she shared. JFAI’s bilingual approach made her feel respected and supported.

On December 11, 2024, Marina proudly completed her citizenship oath ceremony, bringing joy to her family, who now all share U.S. citizenship. "My family is happy because everyone is now a citizen, and I can finally vote," she said. Marina also sees JFAI’s broader impact: "They help a lot and positively affect the community."

Grateful for the service, Marina recommends JFAI to others and advises patience and persistence. "Thank you for your service."

Suzanne at the Laughs for Legal Aid 2024

Stand With Children: Suzanne Isaac’s Commitment to JFAI

Suzanne Isaacs’s dedication to helping children and youth has been a lifelong calling. As a former teacher and ordained clergy in the United Methodist Church, Suzanne’s passion naturally led her to JFAI, where she now volunteers on JFAI’s Fundraising Committee, which supports raising funds for unaccompanied children who are navigating the complexities of the legal system.

Without our help, these children would be lost in the complex legal system. There would be no lawyers to help them through,” Suzanne shared. Her work with the JFAI Fundraising Committee ensures critical funding for legal representation, providing these children a chance to have their cases heard in court.

They need our voice to speak for them and to know that they are not alone. We journey with them as they seek safety and security,” she added. Suzanne’s commitment inspires us all, and her message to the community is clear: “Stand with and for the children. Give them hope for a better tomorrow.”

JFAI Supports Afghan Nationals at Houston Event

JFAI participated in the Afghan Support Center in Houston, part of Operation Allies Welcome, on January 9 and 10. Held at Hilton Americas, the event connected Afghan nationals with vital resources to support their integration into the United States.

Jana and Miriam, attorney and legal assistant, provided participants with information about JFAI’s Asylum project and ensured attendees received clear guidance on the asylum process. With onsite interpretation in Dari and Pashto, language barriers were minimized.

"It was humbling to guide Afghan families striving for a secure future," said Miriam. She added, "We were honored to be part of such an important initiative."

Staying Ahead: JFAI at AILA Midwinter Conference

Attorney José Martinez represented JFAI at the 2025 AILA Midwinter Conference in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on January 17. The event gathered legal professionals from across the nation to explore advanced topics in immigration law.

The conference featured in-depth sessions on Removal and Family-Based Immigration, covering trial skills, advanced asylum and detention topics, and federal litigation updates. A standout moment was a lunch panel that examined the outcome of the 2024 election and its potential impact on immigration practice.

Reflecting on the experience, José noted, "Attending the AILA conference was a great opportunity to deepen my understanding of emerging trends and challenges in immigration law. These insights help us better advocate for our clients."

José Attends ACACIA-MIE Legal Management Training

On January 23-24, José Martinez attended an ACACIA training in Atlanta, Georgia, a two-day event focused on essential skills for legal managers. Participants engaged in sessions covering Employment Law Basics, Performance Feedback, Core Duties of Legal Supervisors, and Creating Inclusive Work Environments.

The training combined group presentations with breakout discussions, offering practical tools like work plans and time management strategies to improve leadership and team management.

A Rundown of Trump’s Executive Actions, From Tariffs to Immigration

The Trump administration has issued sweeping executive orders overhauling immigration policies, including the shutdown of the CBP One app, leaving thousands of migrants in Mexico without a legal pathway to the United States. Existing appointments were canceled, and the suspension of the asylum system has led to immediate deportations for many with pending cases.

These changes, along with troop deployment to the border and mass deportation plans, have intensified fear and uncertainty among immigrant communities. Migrants in unsafe border conditions face limited options, while critics warn these policies threaten human rights and put millions at risk, setting the stage for legal battles ahead.

Laken Riley Act passes U.S. House, sending anti-immigrant bill to Trump

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the Laken Riley Act, mandating the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with theft-related crimes. The act enables ICE to detain individuals charged with crimes such as burglary and larceny. Critics argue it may lead to racial profiling and undermine due process.
