Dear Friend,

Following the success of our recent 2024 Laughs for Legal Aid event, I want to express my gratitude for the support and generosity we received. This March and beyond, we embrace the spirit embodied by Women's History Month, International Women's Day, and AILA’s National Day of Action. These significant moments honor determination and empowerment, qualities we hold and strive to reflect in all our endeavors.

These events remind us of our dedication to assisting our immigrant communities needing legal assistance. Together, let's stay inspired by these milestones and energize our mission with renewed determination and purpose.

With Gratitude,

From Uncertainty to a Safe and Secure Future

Dany celebrated a momentous anniversary this February: nine years since Justice for all Immigrants (JFAI) intervened, transforming her from a high school student facing uncertainty to a successful nurse and mother. Dany, who relocated from Honduras to the United States, encountered difficulties with her future during high school with her mother's deportation, which led to instability and frequent relocations. After being introduced by a local minister, Dany's fortune changed when she connected with JFAI, which provided her legal services through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Steering through challenges, including the absence of vital documents and fears of being shut out from educational and career aspirations, Dany found firm support in JFAI's legal assistance. JFAI’s services and ongoing communication provided a lifeline, turning problems into manageable steps towards hope. This support paved the way for Dany to complete her education, embark on a nursing career, and sustain her family. "I can now think about the future with a secure and safer feeling," she said. For those seeking similar assistance, Dany's advice is heartfelt and clear, “reach out to JFAI, an organization where the people are super nice and genuinely invested in your well-being,” she added.

Dany's story is a testament to the benefits of legal support in enhancing job prospects, living standards, and economic contributions among immigrants, serving as a source of hope for many.

Laughs for Legal Aid 2024, A Night to Remember

We started March with the joy of "Laughs for Legal Aid" 2024. This memorable evening brought together over 100 guests to celebrate generosity and community spirit. For the first time, we introduced the Silent Auction and Fund-a-Need initiatives dedicated to support Unaccompanied Children.

Thanks to your support and contribution, Laughs for Legal Aid was successful, with guests thoroughly enjoying the comedy show and dinner. We extend our gratitude to each participant and volunteer for making this event a success. We look forward to seeing you again next year.

2024 National Day of Action for Immigration Reform

On March 21, JFAI attorneys joined 282 other American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) attorneys to participate in National Day of Action, themed "Stronger America," in Washington, D.C. This occasion gathers advocates, lawyers, and leaders nationwide to push for vital immigration reform, aiming for a system that embodies dignity, justice, and fairness for immigrants in the United States.

This forum fosters solidarity despite obstacles, offering insights and proposed solutions for building a "Stronger America." To access the AILA's recommended strategies, please visit aila.org/NDA.

Divided Opinions in Appeals Court Over Strict Texas Immigration Legislation

An appeals court is split on Texas' SB4 law, allowing police to arrest those suspected of illegal entry, a move critics say oversteps federal authority. The law, sparking national attention, was temporarily enacted before being blocked amid legal challenges. The debate focuses on whether SB4 violates federal jurisdiction over immigration enforcement. With migrant arrivals at the U.S. border at record highs, the law's potential impact is significant. While Texas argues for its right to self-defense, opponents, including Mexico's president, label the law as draconian. The court's pending decision could influence other states' approaches to immigration enforcement, traditionally in the federal domain.
